About Pagosa Springs:

Located in the midst of the San Juan Mountains, the Weminuche wilderness, and at the edge of the Continental Divide at an altitude of 7,052 feet, Pagosa Springs is a unique and unspoiled mountain community which combines history, spectacular scenery, and old fashioned hospitality and the congeniality of country living. Pagosa grew to be a town through trading and ranching, and later was a center for mining and timber. Located in the center of town is a remarkable hot springs, the source of which was named "Pagosa" (Pah-gosa) in the Ute Indian language, meaning "Water (Pah) which has a strong smell (Gosah)."

Pagosa Peak

The Great Pagosa Hot Springs is one of the largest and hottest of all the mineral hot springs in North America. Visitors have come to the area just to experience and enjoy the therapeutic qualities of the remarkable waters of this springs. The town extends along the San Juan River, which has its source at the foot of Wolf Creek Pass.

The original town has now grown to the West to include the Pagosa Lakes area, and is the center for all of Archuleta County which contains many working ranches, farms, as well as thriving local businesses of all kinds including many fine restaurants, art galleries, shops which carry local and regional crafts, and merchandise of all kinds.

Chimney Rock Archaeological Area
Ancestral Puebloan ruins are located midway between Pagosa Springs and Navajo Lake. From mid May to the end of September, you can take a trip back in time as you enjoy a guided tour and learn about the historical culture of these Native Americans. The site was home to the ancestors of the modern Pueblo Indians 1,000 years ago and is of great spiritual significance to these tribes. Their ancestors built over 200 homes and ceremonial buildings high above the valley floor, probably to be near the sacred twin rock pinnacles.

Ski Wolf Creek Ski Area and Durango Mountain Resort
Not one, but two ski areas within easy driving distance from Pagosa Springs. Wolf Creek Ski Area is just 28 miles east of town and boasts the most natural snow in the state of Colorado. Over 1,600 acres of ski terrain, everything for beginners to expert skiers and snowboarders. Durango Mountain Resort is located just 93 miles west of Pagosa Springs. With over 1,200 acres of ski and snowboard terrain, for beginners to experts, plus a tubing area. Year-round activities abound at DMR. Located in town, this museum offers a fascinating and extensive display of the early day Pagosa Springs area. Open during summer months. 970-264-4424

Waterfalls
Pagosa Country has some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the state. There are at least 25 waterfalls throughout the area. You may choose some of the more accessible ones or venture into the scenic mountains to view their dazzling display. Don't forget to take your camera.

Winter Activities
From downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, snowmobiling, and sleigh rides, Pagosa Springs offers a wide array of activities during the winter months. Don’t miss Santa Claus at the Chamber of Commerce or the Community Choir’s holiday concert, and the annual Parade of Lights.

Wolf Creek Pass

Gaming
Pagosa Country is the gateway to Indian Country. The Jicarilla Apache headquarters are in Dulce, New Mexico where the Apache Gallery displays original, traditional and contemporary arts and crafts of Jicarilla artisans. Ignacio is the tribal headquarters of the Southern Utes and houses the Cultural Center with fascinating displays of Indian arts and crafts. The Sky Ute Casino offers gaming opportunities.

Mesa Verde
A short side trip will enable you to explore the cliff dwellings of the Ancient Puebloans. This site has become an international attraction. The culture represented at Mesa Verde reflects more than 700 years of history. From approximately A.D. 600 through A.D. 1300 people lived and flourished in communities throughout the area, eventually building elaborate stone villages in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls.
